A Note from the Heart

This time of year I often feel like I am running around in circles! With presents to buy, decorations to put up, parties to plan and attend, quilt and crafts to make, life can feel like a merry go round! As my mind wanders from here to there recalling the many lists that I have and the chores that need to be completed I long for a day to sit down at my sewing machine and quilt- without a deadline in mind! This has lead my mind to wandering and pondering quilts with circles and all the different ways to create them.

Needle turn applique has always been a favorite quilting technique of mine. I find it relaxing to sit and do some hand work and love that my projects are often portable since I am often on the go. When I discovered Karen Kay Buckley’s Perfect Circle templates making circles became fun and I loved how “perfect” they looked! Using them kind of made me want to make a circle of quilts!

If needle turn applique isn’t your thing, there are several other methods to add circles to your quilting. Creative Grids Circle Savvy Ruler is a great tool for creating circles of fabric. An 18mm rotary cutter is helpful when cutting around the curves. Olfa’s small cutter and Rob Appell’s Applicutter can make cutting circles and curves a snap. Several pattern companies have created patterns that use the Circle Savvy ruler with a variety of design results. Check out patterns by Swirly Girls, Saginaw Street Quilts, and Main St. Market Designs for inspiration and ideas. A search for other patterns that incorporate circles provide a variety of options. Circle Galore and Circles feature applique, Circle Back makes mock circles out of strips, Picadilly Circle is scrappy with easy curved piecing, and Circle of Life is a beautiful, intricate paper-pieced project. Check out some of these patterns. Do I have you going in circles now?

Perhaps it is time to take a moment to relax with a cup of coffee or tea and browse through a quilt book or magazine. Allow yourself to dream about your next quilt project for the New Year. Will it include circles? I think mine will!

Holiday Blessings,
